Working on Fall Projects

Hello,

It looks like I will be doing good to make one blog post a week. It has been a long week. We have had some really windy days. Today it has rained pretty much off and on all day. It is supposed to be cold, windy, and rainy this weekend. We even have chances of snow on Sunday! I am so not ready for winter, but I guess my opinion doesn't count. LOL I love fall, but as soon as it turns cold, I am ready for spring.

I guess I will share a few pictures of some of my projects in the past month. This is called Autumn Splendor. It is, of course, a Thimbleberries pattern. I have wanted to make this table runner ever since I saw it in Lynette Jensen's book 'Quilting for Harvest.' So one day, I decided I was just going to do it. I made the nine patches, fused the applique pieces on, then machine blanket stitched around them and sewed the whole thing together. I really can measure, but I was really surprised at how large this is. It is a table runner, but is 28 X 52 inches.

You can see how large it is in this picture with Aeris beside it. She just had to test it out. LOL
I have this all marked and sandwiched, ready to hand quilt. It has to wait in line. (grin)

Please excuse any weirdness in this blog post. I am still trying to learn about Firefox and I have updated something on blogger. Pictures aren't going exactly where I wanted, but at least I don't have to edit HTML. That was a pain.

This is a wall quilt called Pumpkin Patch. You guessed it. It is another Lynette Jensen pattern from 'Quilting for Harvest'. I really love this book. This quilt was supposed to have another 5 inch border all around it, but I decided to leave it off. I just couldn't find anything in my stash that I liked with this black border fabric. I think it is big enough anyway. It also is marked and sandwiched, waiting to be quilted.

I also wanted to share what my sweet husband made for me. He knows how much I enjoy redwork, but I have to struggle to get the designs traced on to my fabric. I have been using a bin turned over a desk lamp, but it is awkward and gets hot. So he decided to make me a light box. He asked how big I wanted it. I think it ended up about 14 inches square. He bought a small florescent under cabinet light. Then he took some scrap lumber and built a box. He fastened the light to the bottom of the box and drilled a hole for the cord. He sent me to town to buy a 14 inch square piece of plexi-glass. I love it. It works great and doesn't get hot. If you don't count the cost for the scrap lumber, it cost him about $14 to make this for me. What a guy! He said we can take the top off , turn the light around and add another light if needed, but this puts out plenty of light. I may paint it some day, but for now it is just fine for me.

I will share the last two blocks for A Quilter's Garden, then I am off to bed. This is block number 11 called Starburst.

Block # 12 is called Tulips. I have all twelve flower blocks done now, but probably won't get the top together till after Christmas. I guess it depends on how I get along with my Christmas sewing and quilting. LOL

Well, I hope this all worked, because I need to get to bed. I think I am going to JoAnn's in the morning. Their Columbus Day sale starts tomorrow or rather later this morning. LOL I have really gone through my fusibles the past couple of weeks. I have fused a trout, eagle, 3 chickens, and a calico cat. They are all waiting to be machine blanket stitched. I also made 2 purses this week and finished another redwork mini-quilt. I have the pieced borders all waiting for my Birds and Blooms quilt and just about have all the needle turned applique done on it. I have found that I really get a lot done when I don't spend so much time on the computer. Bren, if you are reading this, I tried to comment on your blog post earlier, but there must have been a glitch. It wouldn't let me. I'll try again tomorrow. I forgot, our internet service was down for 2 days this week too. I really miss it when I don't have it. Everyone have a great day. Thank you for visiting.

No More Blogging Goals!

Good afternoon,

I made a blog goal to make at least 15 posts in the month of September. Hmmmm! I made five. So no more making goals for how many posts I will make. I don't know what is going to happen in life and sometimes it takes so long to load pictures, that I just don't want to do it. So I will make a post when I can, and that will be ok with me. While I have not been blogging, I have been really busy quilting. (grin) I have several pictures to share, and just hope I can. We switched to Firefox as a web browser instead of Internet Explorer. So far I have really liked Firefox, but this is my first time to try to blog since the switch. I will see how this works.

I mentioned before about taking some of my redwork projects and turning them into wall quilts. These were lots of fun. I made this one in a log cabin style with red and blue fabrics from my scrap bin. I think I will call this 'Primitive Doll'. This one quilted up really fast. Here is a closeup of the original redwork project.

This is another fun one. I am calling this 'Welcome Fall'.

Ok, I still like Firefox better, but it is different to move my pictures in the post. I am having to cut and paste the Html code instead of just clicking and dragging the pictures where I want them to be. So this is taking me longer than I thought. Posts may be shorter from now on. LOL Before I leave, though, I will share the next two pictures from The Quilter's Garden. Block #9 is called Verbena.
Block #10 is called Fan Flower.

I am going to do some more research and see if I can speed the uploading of pictures. I think I would post more often if it didn't take so long to upload the pictures. The sun just poked out. It has been raining all day. Good to see the sun.

Thank you all for visiting. I have more pictures to share, maybe tomorrow. No promises, though, since tomorrow is grocery day. I hope you all have a blessed day. Not sure what happened to my signature. LOL

Tinkerbell and other projects!

Good evening,
I don't normally have time to post on my blog on the weekends, but find myself piddling on the computer tonight and decided I might as well make a post! (grin) Thank you all for the birthday wishes for our daughter. Cath, glad you got to have a meal without needing a bath afterwards. LOL I am sure you and Jeremy had a wonderful time!
I have been really busy this month. I have pieced together 3 wall quilts and a table runner. Yesterday, I took 2 of my redwork projects and added borders around them. I made them about 20" or so. They can be wall quilts also. Today I got all of the quilting lines drawn on these. I hope to get them sandwiched tomorrow after my Bible study. Whew! I am almost dizzy! LOL I will share pictures in the next few posts. I forgot to take pictures of the redwork quilts. Now they have the quilt markings on them, so I will wait till they are done to share. I am going full steam ahead, working on Christmas projects.

This little quilt is called Snow Treats. I just love it. I am usually only really 'in' to fall quilts, but this little winter quilt just won my heart. I machine appliqued the snowmen, then hand embroidered the faces, buttons down the front, and twig arms. I love how all the colors come together on this. It measures about 21" square. After I get it quilted, I will try to get a closeup of one of the snowmen. I can't figure out how to make my pictures so that you can click on them and make them bigger. Anyone have a simple (really simple) explanation on how to do this?
Our granddaughter, Ava Beth, wanted a Tinkerbell costume. Her mama couldn't find a costume that Ava liked, so she called and asked me if I would make Ava a costume. Well, of course, I will make my grandbaby anything she wants. LOL So Cath got everything and sent it to me. My first thought when I opened the mailer was, 'What have I gotten myself into?' LOL All of this for one costume! So I drug out the pattern instructions and started reading. Ok, not as bad as feared. I have never worked with satin. Oh goodness! That is the hardest fabric that I have ever tried to press, pin, cut out, and/or sew. It ravels and runs. It tries to slide all over the sewing machine. The iron must be set 'just right' or it either doesn't iron or 'well, I think you can figure out what happens when it is too hot.' Let's just say I am really glad I tested things on scraps first. LOL Anyway, I got the pattern pieces cut from the huge sheets of tissue paper. Folded it all up and put the unused pieces back in the envelope. Wouldn't you know, I missed one piece. (eye roll here) So I drug the tissue paper back out, found the missing piece and got it cut out. Then I heavily pinned the pattern to the fabric and carefully cut it out. Sewing it wasn't too bad. I think it turned out pretty good. It is supposed to have a sheer skirt under the pedals, but Cathryn didn't want it, so I made bloomers and figured out how to do away with the skirt. I changed a few things to make it work for me. This comes from years of sewing clothes for our kids. I will say, that if I had been new to sewing, the pattern directions would have lost me. Sometimes whole steps were left out. Here is the back. Here is a closeup of the belt. It has grommets added. This the first time I have ever put those in anything, but I figured it out pretty quick. This project took most of Thursday to complete, but it was so worth it. I emailed these pictures to Cathryn. She showed Ava. A few minutes later my phone rang. I answered it to hear Ava say, "Tinkerbell! Thank you grandma. I love you. Bye!" LOL That made all of my frustrations disappear in a blink. (grin) You grandmas out there know just what I am talking about. Ava is happy with her costume. That is all that matters! Before I go, I will share the next two blocks of the Quilter's Garden. I haven't worked any more on it for a couple of weeks. This is block # 7 called Windflower.
Block #8 is called Zinnia. Well that is it for this evening. I hope to be back next week for some more posts, but no promises. Sometimes life is just too busy to be on the computer. Everyone have a great weekend. Thank you for visiting.

Three Posts in a Row!

Good afternoon,

I figured I'd better post today since tomorrow is grocery day, and I don't usually have time to post on the weekends. We have a 3-day weekend coming up, too. Woohoo! I know Kevin will be happy to have another 3-day weekend. He said something about grilling some burgers, hotdogs, and ring bologna. He loves ring bologna. It is a big treat for him. (grin)

I decided to try Bonnie Hunter's leader/ender method of piecing. So I cut a bunch of light and also dark 2 1/2 inch squares. I keep them to the right of my sewing machine and use them to begin and end each row of chain piecing that I do. I am getting a nice stash of little 2-patch blocks. I also have been sewing the cut off triangles from blocks together instead of tossing them. These make good half square triangle blocks. So, soon I will make a scrap quilt completely out of my leftovers. That makes me feel good.
I have really been enjoying hand quilting of the Noah's Ark quilt. I love doing feathers on blocks where they show up so nice. I almost have the 2nd feather block done, then only 4 more.
I have one of the star blocks quilted and hope to get another one done tonight while watching tv. I said I would share more of the Quilter's Garden. This is block #5 called Lollipop Lily. This is block #6 called Painted Daisy. I have all twelve blocks done, but haven't taken pictures of the rest of them. Now I am trying to decide what fabric to use for the alternate blocks. The blocks are set on point, so I will need 6 alternate blocks and also the setting triangles. Not sure if I want the alternate and setting blocks all the same fabric or 2 different ones. I am thinking a green fabric with branches on it for the alternate blocks and a beige for the setting triangles, but haven't made a decision yet.
I know this is short, but I want to get back to the Noah's Ark. Also Judge Judy is on. I like to watch her and see who she will chew out today. LOL Everyone have a good day. Thanks for visiting.

August Goal Results!

I did not reach my entire goal, but I am satisfied with what I got accomplished. I am still working on the Double Delight. I am going to finish that quilt if it kills me. LOL It is those rolling star blocks. I love the way they look, but really don't enjoy making them. I know quilting is all about having fun, but I just can't give up on this one. I have seen several of them finished and they are beautiful! I hope to spend at least a couple of hours a week working on it. I am almost ready to start sewing the blocks together.

I did finish the 2 hand quilting projects that I had started. Here is Harbor Town. I really like it. Here is the center of it.
I just love the way the lighthouse turned out.
Here is the back, although you can't really see the quilting.I also finished the D9P (Disappearing Nine Patch). This is just a lap size quilt, so it shouldn't have taken so long to quilt, but I kept putting it on the back burner for other projects. It is completely done now, though, even washed. (grin)Here is a closeup of one of the corners. Please excuse my pictures. I am not a good photographer, even though I love to take pictures.
I used a green cotton sheet for the backing. It really helps the quilting to stand out. I have used flat sheets for the backing on most of my bedsize quilts. I have never had any problems. I already shared pictures of the Green Star Quilt Along and Froggy Went a Courtin', so I won't post them again. I also have most of the applique done on the Birds and Blooms, but haven't taken a picture of it lately. So as you can see, I really was busy this past month. Now I am working on quilting Noah's Ark Quilt. I also want to start some new projects. I have several pictures to share, but will divide them up over the next few days. I think I would blog more often if it didn't take so long to upload pictures. I guess I should start bringing my handwork over to the computer to work on while the pictures are uploading. Hmm, never thought of doing that before. LOL

I now have all 12 of the Quilter's Garden blocks done. I'm ready to start putting it together. Here is block #3 called Bleeding Heart. Here is block # 4 called Cactus Flower. Well, that is it for tonight. It is September 1st. Dare I set another goal? Why not? (grin) This time my goal will be to make at least 15 posts on my blog this month. If I make the posts shorter with less pictures, I think I can do it. Tomorrow, I plan to tell you about our one day vacation. Kevin took me to Jamesport (Missouri's largest Amish community) last Friday. I had lots of fun, but I'll share that tomorrow. Everyone have a good night. Thanks for visiting.

More Fun!

Good afternoon,

I am working right along on my goal for this month. I may not get everything done that I planned, but I am doing ok. (grin) The weather this month has helped me out. It rained again this morning, so we can't do anything outside. No outside work equals more quilting time. Right? LOL

I went through the box of pieces that I had cut out last year for Quilter's Garden. I even made sure that I had cut all the pieces needed for each block. I did find one piece missing. Not sure if I overlooked cutting it out, or if it is hiding from me. Anyway, I am so glad that I stuck all the leftover fabric for these blocks down in the bottom of the box. I needed a dark gold 4 1/2 inch square. Whew! I had a strip just over 4 3/4 inches wide leftover. I got that cut and each block's pieces put together and labled. I already had 4 blocks together and decided to make one block a day till I get it done. Today I am ready for block#8 and it is a doozy! If I counted right, it has 61 pieces in a 12 1/2 inch block. This is block #1 called Bachelor Buttons.
Number 2 is called Star Gazer.
I will show you a few more blocks next time. I think this quilt is going to turn out pretty. I haven't even picked the setting fabric yet. I may work on that this afternoon.

I wanted to share a few more pictures from our BBQ at Carolyn and Bob's. Isn't this chair fabulous? Bob's brother, Terry, made it for Carolyn. I sat in it and fell in love.(big grin) It is so comfy. I can see me sitting on the porch quilting away. Anyway, when Terry arrived, Kevin asked him if he would make one for me just like Carolyn's. He had to cut it down because Carolyn is like me and rather short. The one he made for Bob, just swamped her and me. LOL
Terry does wonderful work. I am so excited, I can hardly wait to get my new chair.
I thought you all might like to see some pictures of the deck that Carolyn and Bob just built. It is pretty big. They already had a 10X10 concrete deck on the front of the house, so they went out another 10 ft. then turned to the side with a 10X11. So it is shaped like an 'L', 10X20 ft with a 10X11 ft to the side.

Carolyn and Bob love watching birds and squirrels, so their back yard is full of birdfeeders, birdbaths, birdhouses, and squirrel feeders. Carolyn has two squirrels that visit every day. She calls them Freddie and Freddina. LOL I would call this the feeding station.Terry made this wooden feeder for them.
We saw so many different kinds of birds while we were there. It is like a sactuary. I hope you can see the red cardinal in this picture. He stayed there and ate for a long time. I really enjoyed watching all the birds. There were too many people present for Freddie and Freddina to come, though. LOL

As soon as I get Harbor Town washed, I will share a picture with you. I have been quilting away in the evenings on the Disappearing Nine Patch. I drew some motifs on it with the blue washout pencil. It has been so humid that some of the lines are starting to fade, so I really want to get it done. Haven't touched Birds and Blooms or Double Delight for a week or so, but I'll get back to them. I think I had better get my Quilter's Garden block done since they are calling for storms this afternoon. I unplug my machine when it storms. So I need to get with it. Everyone have a good day. Thanks for visiting.

I have a goal!

Good afternoon,

I know it has been 2 weeks since I posted, but I have been busy and didn't really have much to blog about. Now I have come up with a plan. Several quilters in blogland are trying to finish up things in August. (Big sigh!) I have so many projects to finish. After reading Bren's blog about how she continued on with her Basket Case quilt even though she had lots of problems with it, I decided I needed to finish some of these tops. Bren's Basket Case is beautiful, by the way. You should go to her blog and check it out.

So my goal for August is to get the 4 quilts (5 if I count Birds and Blooms) done to flimsy stage. I also have 2 quilts that I am hand quilting at the moment. I want to get them complete, bindings and all. I might even try to throw in a couple of shirts for Kevin. Nope, still haven't made his shirts. LOL I know this sounds like a lot, but I don't plan to let myself start another project till I have these done. So to be accountable, I am posting about it here. I will try to keep you all updated on my progress, but if I spend time on the computer, I don't have time for quilting. LOL

First I want to finish to flimsy stage the Frog quilt. I have half the blocks done and the rest of it cut out, so hope to have it pieced by tomorrow. This is a baby quilt, so not real big. There are 12 blocks in it. The blocks measure 10 inches square finished.
Next up is my Green Star Quilt Along quilt. It was a quilt along on Amanda Jean's blog a long time ago. All that I need to do for this one is put the borders on it. It is large, queen size I think. I really love how this one looks. Just need to get those borders on it.
I have Double Delight cut out, but need to get it finished. It was a mystery quilt by Bonnie Hunter. I love the way everyone elses turned out, but hate trimming. Half of the blocks have lots of trimming. I have all of the double 9-patch blocks done, but the square in a square blocks still need lots of work. These are the 2 basic blocks for this quilt. I didn't go scrappy as Bonnie did. I think it will be really pretty once it is finished. I just need to bite the bullet and get those square in a square blocks done.I started A Quilter's Garden over a year ago. It is a Thimbleberries' pattern. I have the flower blocks all cut out and 4 of them done. That is all, so this one will take the most time. Here is what it should look like, except with my fabric choices, of course.
Of course, I will continue to work on the Birds and Blooms quilt. I have the bottom applique done, so just 3 more sides of applique, then I can make and put on the border with all those HST's (half square triangles). LOL I have a new ruler for those, that is supposed to make it much easier. I hope so.
I am quite a bit over half done on the Disappearing Nine Patch. I had planned to have this one done in May. That didn't happen, so it got put on hold while I worked on other projects. It is wrinkled because it has been sort of folded beside my rocker, patiently waiting for me to get back to it. LOL Can you believe that I am having trouble figuring out which color thread I used to quilt it. Why didn't I put the thread I was using with the quilt? Hmmm, it is either white or off white. I am over half done on Harbor Town. This one has been lots of fun for me. It is basically just straight stitching. Well, there you have it. Do you think I can get all of these done in August? Maybe I am just spitting in the wind, but I thought I would be more apt to work on these if I posted about them. LOL We do have alot going on right now, but I still have lots of free time while Kevin is at work. If I don't meet my goal this month, I will just continue on in September. I definitely have plenty of handquilting to keep me busy this winter. (grin) As I said, I will try to keep you updated, but it will probably be smaller posts with less pictures. Uploading pictures on here takes a long time.
Thank you to everyone who wished us happy anniversary. We had a good time. Also thank you for visiting my blog. Please come again. Have a good day.
